Abstract:

Over the last 15 years, the breast pump has shifted from a tool used mostly by working parents to a standard breastfeeding accessory, virtually required by modern infant feeding practices. Pumping has been embraced by today’s parents as a preventative measure for milk supply concerns, flexibility, and control. Yet the rapid normalization of early, frequent, and sometimes excessive milk expression may come with unintended consequences. This presentation explores how modern pump culture, shaped by policy, tech innovations, social media influencers, and commercial influence, is rapidly reshaping lactation experiences and feeding decisions in the early postpartum period. In this session, we will examine a multitude of factors that influence milk expression and the use and overuse of the breast pump. In addition, we will discuss the downstream effects of over-pumping, including dysregulated milk supply, inflammation, mastitis risk, and altered perceptions of normal feeding behaviors. In addition, this session will examine a recent 2025 study by Nardella et al. to explore current pumping trends, including early initiation of milk expression, pumping frequency, and unintended downstream effects of initiating pumping early. This presentation will underscore the importance of balance, critical thinking, and at-breast infant feeding techniques, offering practical strategies for educators and clinicians to support families using pumps.
