Abstract:
Exclusivity is a term that has become an unspoken gatekeeper in the infant feeding world and the pendulum can swing in either direction depending on who you are speaking to. It is a term used to define who is uplifted as "successful" or just settling in their feeding choices. Many families are navigating a postpartum life shaped by inequity, return to work timelines, separations, trauma, and shifting family structures. Exclusivity is not always a lack of desire. It is often a lack of access, time, or systemic support. It can also be a declaration of autonomy and freedom in a family's feeding choices.
This presentation challenges lactation professionals and supporters to evolve our framework. This session presents a model in which direct breastfeeding, pumping, supplementation, and responsive scheduling are competing forces, but can be coordinated tools when used with intention, physiology, and dignity. Learners will gain strategies to protect supply when direct nursing is intermittent, prevent bottle dependence, and apply autonomy-honoring language that strengthens breastfeeding duration and parental confidence in feeding.
